Takamine Acoustic Guitars Maintenance Tips

Proper care will keep your Takamine guitar sounding great, looking beautiful, and playing comfortably for many years. Takamine guitars are built with high-quality tonewoods, so a few simple habits make a big difference.

1. Clean Your Guitar After Every Playing Session

• Wipe the strings with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove sweat, dirt, and oils that cause corrosion.
• Gently wipe down the body, neck, and headstock with a soft, lint-free cloth.
• For the finish: Use a quality guitar polish sparingly. On satin finishes, polish very lightly or simply use a slightly damp cloth followed immediately by a dry one to avoid moisture buildup.
• Avoid household cleaners, furniture polish, or abrasive products — they can damage the finish.

2. Condition the Fretboard and Bridge

Takamine recommends using lemon oil or a specially formulated fingerboard conditioner:

• Do this 2–3 times a year, or whenever the wood looks dry.
• Remove the strings first.
• Apply a small amount to a cloth and rub it into the fretboard and bridge (including around the frets).
• Let it soak in for a few minutes, then wipe off any excess.
• This prevents cracking and keeps the fretboard smooth and hydrated.

Note: Never use lemon oil on maple fretboards (some modern models may have them) — use a dedicated maple-safe conditioner instead.

3. Control Humidity (Very Important for Takamine Guitars)

Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, which can cause cracking, high action, or buzzing.

• Ideal humidity level: 40% – 60% relative humidity (RH).
• Store your guitar in its case with a good case humidifier (especially in Ireland’s damp or dry seasons).
• Use a digital hygrometer inside the case to monitor levels.
• Avoid storing near radiators, windows with direct sunlight, or damp areas like bathrooms.

4. Change Strings Regularly

• Change strings every 2–6 months depending on how often you play.
• Fresh strings improve tone, playability, and intonation dramatically on Takamine guitars.
• When restringing, clean the fretboard thoroughly and lubricate the nut and saddle slots with graphite or a specialized nut lubricant for better tuning stability.

5. Professional Setup Once a Year

Even with good home care, take your Takamine to a qualified guitar technician or luthier annually for:

• Truss rod adjustment
• Action and intonation check
• Fret leveling (if needed)
• Electronics inspection (especially important for electro-acoustic models with TP-4T, CT4B, or similar preamps)
